Which Country Can I Study in Europe for Free?

So many people would jump at a chance to study at some of the most prestigious universities in Europe. Well! This post describes some of the top European countries where you could study for free or very cheaply.

Most of these universities also have programs that allow students to complete a minor or degree from another country and then transfer back to their home country.

Which Country Can I Study in Europe for Free?

Unlike other parts of the world, tuition fees are still lower in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, etc. than they are in the US, Australia, and Canada. The top international universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, etc. will be found in Europe. With higher education so popular in Europe, there are numerous opportunities for studying abroad at no cost.

So which country can you study for free in Europe?

1. Study in Germany for free: Germany has so many study opportunities for students. There are so many universities that allow students to study for free especially the public schools in Germany. The free tuition applies to both domestic and international students regardless of their nationality. Students only have to pay nominal university administration costs of about €150-250 (~US$170-280).

A recent change to German law permits graduates of any German state school to qualify for student visa status without proving proficiency in the German language or proof of residence in Germany. The exemption also applies to all graduate degrees awarded by German universities.

2. Study in France for free: France is one of the best countries to study abroad because it has such an affordable cost of living and its degree quality is comparable to those of other European countries. Most French universities require no tuition fees for domestic students but most do require a fee for international students. It can be difficult to work while studying in France but if you find a job that matches your level of study you can stay on after graduation with a long-term visa.

3. Study in the Nordic countries for free: Studying in Finland or Norway will allow you to work during your studies without requiring you to prove employment after graduation. There are some stipulations however such as minimum length of time studying at the university and maximum working hours per week.

This does mean that Nordic countries may not be the best choice for international students looking to earn while studying, although they are excellent options for people from around the world who are looking to pursue postgraduate degrees in fields like dentistry or engineering.

4. Belgium:  Belgian Universities charge very little tuition fees and do not require any English language skills from their students. Some institutions offer bursaries for low-income students but if you want to live in Belgium then it may be advisable to plan ahead before coming to study in Belgium.

5. Czech Republic:  You will need to pay tuition fees if you choose to study in the Czech Republic but there are other ways to reduce the cost of studying in the Czech Republic. In some cases, if you choose to study a part-time degree then the cost of tuition fees may be subsidized. Students who have finished their studies can often return to the Czech Republic on a limited visa allowing them to work while continuing their studies.

This option is only available for full-time degree courses though. The majority of universities do not allow part-time students to remain on after graduating so make sure you research which options are available before applying.

6. Austria:  Students in Austria pay no tuition fees at public universities but must apply for state financial support if they wish to study privately. Scholarships and loans are available but this means that private institutions will often have higher fees than public ones.

Austrians studying in Europe can apply for a grant from the European Social Fund (ESF) which covers living costs while studying in Europe. If you’re interested in studying in Austria then check out this guide on what you can expect when applying for funding in Austria.

7. Greece:  The only thing you will need to pay when studying in Greece is a small one-off registration fee which can be as little as €2-€4 per academic year. Universities are exempt from charging tuition fees for foreign students who hold a student visa or residence permit for up to six months, although many charges an administrative fee of around €20-€100 per academic year. However, these charges can vary by university and many students find that their costs increase substantially once they begin their studies.
